The Flaming Lips and Lightning Bolt
We’ve had a summer break and now we’re back. Whether we’re refreshed and raring to fill your various screens and feeds with musical pleasures is another matter (not that we exactly overload you with such delights, but anyway…)
Just before leaving on a jet plane to foreign shores I learnt of a collaborative EP by two BBO favourites, The Flaming Lips and Lightning Bolt. Sure enough the first video for ‘I Wanna Get High But I Don’t Want Brain Damage’ was as suitably tripped out and fucked up as a you’d expect from a meeting of psych-pop experimentalists and the finest purveyors of cyclonic racket:
And then, a mere week after coming back, the second tune blips up on the radar and the high expectations met by the first are further exceeded: after three minutes of pure Lips cosmic bliss ‘I’m Working at NASA on Acid’ is demolished by a mid-section of Bolt clatter at hyper-speed:
Both videos are, unsurprisingly, not for the feint-hearted, both aurally and visually, but pleasure always abounds in such confrontations. When this sense destroying mutual effort will get a material release has yet to be confirmed, but the videos are witness to the need to know such crucial info.
