Holy Flip

Continuing our theme, here’s Holy Fuck, another name guaranteed to catch the eye. The Grauniad was tutting over how the ugliness of the name gets in the way of the music but these Canadians are clearly after more than brief notoriety. The current single ‘Lovely Allen’ stands out for its euphoric refrain and succession of build-ups, like a Sigur Ros chorus repeated for four and a half minutes, but most of the rest of 2007’s eponymous album is darker. The emphasis on electronic music played live on improvised and ‘proper’ instruments recalls bands like Silver Apples or perhaps the odd Hawkwind track, and the beatier stuff reminds me of early Chemical Brothers but with more muttering. Recommended.

  1. I like this album. I was slightly underwhelmed on first listen, but it has grown on me considerably. I think I will enjoy listening to it over the summer. And apparently they make an incredible amount of noise live, which is generally a good thing.

  2. I need to give this a more ‘developed’ listen. First Hawkwind ref on BBO? Struggling to think of another band for the theme and don’t want to google it….

  3. Ok, listening now and its bloody brill . ‘Safari’ could easily be t’Wind. Thanks!
